Movie Review: 'Jeff, Who Lives at Home' Is a Mumblecore

What exactly is a mumblecore? Read on and decide if you want to see this comedy from the Duplass brothers this weekend.

Writers, directors and brothers Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass have written a new thought provoking and humorous film in a new(er) genre called mumblecore

Jeff played by Jason Segel (The Five-Year Engagement , How I Met Your Mother ) is headed to on his mother’s birthday to pick up some glue. While his brother Pat played by Ed Helms (The Office) is following around his wife because he suspects she’s cheating on him. And the two coincidentally spend the day together in what Jeff thinks is divine intervention.

Susan Sarandon play’s Jeff’s mother Sharon, who lovingly enables Jeff and his couch-warming and life pondering.

Jason Segel is amusing and entertaining. Ed Helms is the perfect sidekick to this dialogue powered brotherly love that develops in the span of a day. Jeff may be a slacker living in his mom’s basement but he has a good way of looking at things, discovers Pat. And though Pat has the Porsche, his life may not be what it appears on the outside.

Full of thought provoking moments, Jeff, Who Lives at Home is worth the 83 minutes. Susan Sarandon and her boys have an opportunity to make some changes in their lives from the ho-hum of daily routines.

There’s even a sub-plot involving Sarandon and a secret admirer from work that could give her a shot at love, being that she’s a widower.

A lot of good dialogue and a unique, and amusing ending that is sure to please. I give it to the Duplass brothers, their movie delivers and if you’re not too familiar with them you soon will be.

I give this film 4 out of 5 Patches, now playing at Rancho Niguel 8.
