Local Sea Scout receives $10,000 Scholarship award
Mariners 936 announce the 2016 winner of the Cvengros Scholarship

Local Youth awarded $10,000 Scholarship
Ryan Clark of Laguna Niguel is this year’s recipient of the $10,000 Cvengros scholarship. This generous scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior member of Dana Point’s Mariners sea scouts to commemorate the life of Christopher Cvengros and his love of the ocean. Ryan rose above other candidates by demonstrating a concern for others and their safety at sea. Clark has held a variety of leadership positions within the ship, and was recently awarded the rank of Quartermaster. Candidates are evaluated on many areas of performance including active scouting involvement, academic performance and community service. Clark has been accepted to Cal Maritime University, where he will begin studying mechanical engineering in the Fall.
Christopher Cvengros was a very active, dedicated member of the Mariner Sea Scouts in Dana Point. His tragic death on December 15, 1996 shocked and saddened the close knit community of young people that shared with him a love of the sea and all things nautical. His parents, Bill and Joan Cvengros have established a $10,000 college scholarship to benefit those youths who, like Christopher, have pursued a better knowledge and enjoyment of the sea as well as developing an emphasis on safety. The scholarship is paid out over four years and requires a demonstration of ongoing commitment to academic performance.
