Ocean Cliffs At Dana Point Will Be 'Reimagined' In Multi-Million Transformation Of JW Marriott Resort

DANA POINT, CA — The Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in Dana Point is set to become a JW Marriott following a multimillion-dollar renovation that will bring a new resort pool, restaurant, ballroom and expanded event spaces to the blufftop property overlooking Dana Point Harbor.

JW Marriott and Aimbridge Hospitality announced plans on Sept. 15 to transform the longtime Dana Point resort into The Ocean Cliffs at Dana Point, a JW Marriott Resort.

The renovation will be completed in phases and will include a new central resort pool, an expanded multiacre event lawn, renovated meeting and ballroom facilities, a redesigned arrival area and a chef-driven restaurant, according to the companies.

Plans also call for a new 6,000-square-foot ballroom.

The 371-room resort has overlooked Dana Point Harbor for nearly four decades and is known for its Victorian-inspired architecture and proximity to Lantern Bay Park.

Ben Ly, general manager of The Ocean Cliffs at Dana Point, said the project comes as Dana Point itself continues to change, including the ongoing redevelopment of Dana Point Harbor.

“For nearly 40 years, this storied property has stood as a beacon overlooking Dana Point Harbor, calling both locals home and visitors to our shores to experience the quintessential Southern California coastal lifestyle," Ly said. "This renovation evolves the resort to be in tune with the rising tide here in Dana Point, complete with a refreshed design, new destination-style resort pool, a prominent signature restaurant concept, engaging experiences, and larger gathering spaces catering to both visiting guests and locals alike.”

The renovation will also relocate and expand the resort's event lawn near Lantern Bay Park and the Richard Henry Dana Ballroom. The redesigned area is intended to accommodate both larger groups and multiple events simultaneously.

The new central pool will be positioned to take advantage of views of the Pacific Ocean and will include updated lounge areas and food and beverage service.

Design firms HKS and ROAM are handling the property's redesign, which the companies said will draw inspiration from Dana Point's coastal history, cottages, Lantern District and surfing culture.

Changes are also planned for the lobby and other public spaces. The lobby will connect with dining areas and an ocean-view deck, while meeting pre-function areas will be redesigned to allow for more indoor-outdoor use.

The resort's 371 guest rooms will also receive updates as part of the project.

The property's existing family pool, cabana rentals, Kids Club and Splash Zone are expected to remain. Plans also call for updates to the resort spa and additional outdoor and locally focused guest programs.

The resort has long served as a venue for weddings, conferences and other large gatherings in Dana Point.

The transition also comes as the nearby Dana Point Harbor also undergoes a major redevelopment project.

Once the renovation is complete, the property will operate under Marriott International's JW Marriott brand while continuing to be operated by Aimbridge Hospitality.
