DANA POINT, CA — Travelers aboard a Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching vessel this weekend were treated to a mesmerizing sight in the water: the first blue whale of the season.

"Blue whale season runs from May until November as they migrate in the summer and gather in small groups," Dana Wharf COO Donna Kalez told Patch. "[We] usually spot our first blue whale in May, but this is early and last year we did not see our first blue until June 4."

Kalez said the early sighting is a promising indication of a phenomenal whale watching season.

"When you think about how the blue whale is the largest animal to live on the planet, bigger than a dinosaur of megalodon, that is amazing," Capt. Tommy White said of the sighting.
