San Juan Capistrano's Surfers Healing Surfboard Auction Continues through New Year's Eve

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA —Local non-profit, Surfer's Healing, provides "one perfect day" to families of children affected by autism. Now, they are conducting an end of the year surfboard auction to raise funds for 2017.

"New Years 2017 will be our 20th year of free surf camps for children with autism and their family's worldwide," Surfer's Healing founder Izzy Paskowitz said.

For Paskowitz, the language of surfing translates to kids with autism.

“The water calms every sense, and for kids with autism, the senses are all firing at once,” Paskowitz said. “In the ocean, you have sights, smells, touch, sounds and the taste of salty water. We help kids through a simple act of riding waves together and encourage them with the experience.”

The love of water is a common denominator with parents of autistic children.

“Every parent will tell you how much their child loves the water,” he said. A lifetime surfer, Paskowitz spoke about changing the lives of thousands of families across the globe living with autism.

“My son Isaiah has autism,” Paskowitz told Patch in an interview earlier this year. “As a surfer, I wanted nothing more than to teach my son how to surf, and love surfing.”

The online auction of the artistic surf boards will fundraise for 2017 surf camps. Each board will be available for pick up at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel or auction winners can arrange for shipping. All boards are currently available for viewing at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel.

Paul Naudè, founder and owner of the surf brand Vissla, started building surfboards in early 1970’s in his hometown of Durban, South Africa.

After eight years of building surfboards commercially, Paul’s career transitioned from being a board builder to becoming a leader in the surf apparel and lifestyle industry. However, he has always remained close to and participated in all aspects of surfboard craftsmanship.

Paul, who lives in Laguna Beach, California with his wife and family, continues to create a variety of surfboards in his spare time, executing each step himself, from shaping to color and painting to finishing.

This surfboard, which Paul crafted and donated to this worthy cause, epitomizes modern surfboard design.

It is a 6’2” by 19 1/4” by 2 3/8“ asymmetrical design for a regular foot surfer. Based on the resin art design, this board has been named ‘The Night Rider.’

Paul attributes the inspiration for this board to up-and-coming, renowned, and innovative, shaper, Ryan Burch.
