Sand Sculptor Prays For Healing At Baby Beach: Dana Point

Did you see the hands made out sand in Dana Point over the weekend? South County artist Jay Bellamy has become famous for his sandcastles.

DANA POINT, CA — San Clemente resident Jay Bellamy is no stranger to building castles in the sand. Over the weekend, the sand-sculptor created prayerful hands inside an outline of the united states in what he called a "healing of a country torn apart by differences," he told the Orange County Register in a recent report.

When the last section was smoothed, he and a group present, joined hands around it, forming a circle.

"We prayed for our country, our president, for our leaders and our children," he told the Register.

Bellamy has also sculpted a crucifix with Jesus' likeness on Easter, a battlefield cross over Memorial Day, for servicemen and women who have fallen in battle, and many more over the years.

His first sand sculpture was to honor his sister who was struck by a train near the pier in 1995. That rendering was of a dolphin at San Clemente Pier. He is famous for his sea creature and animal creations, as well as caricatures of SpongeBob Squarepants and Winnie the Pooh, to name a few.
