Sea Lions Pile In Dana Point: Patch Photo Of The Day

Resident photographer Kristine Erickson spotted these sun-soaked sea lions off the coast of Dana Point earlier this week.

DANA POINT, CA — The days are looking a little bit grayer, Orange County — but it was only last week that the sun was high and unobscured in the sky, and rainy mornings were far from everyone's mind.

San Juan Capistrano resident photographer Kristine Erickson snapped this shot last week off the coast of Dana Point. If you focus on the sea lions on the upper right side of the image, you will notice one sea lion with an orange tag, Erickson said. An orange tag means the sea lion was rescued before being released back into the wild.

While enjoying a Dana Wharf Whale Watching Tour this past week, Erickson also captured a shot of a gray whale showing a little tail fin.

Pods of gray whales typically begin their southern migration in October, where they leave their Arctic feeding grounds and make their way to Baja California. According to OceanicSociety.com, gray whales travel roughly 75 miles per day at five miles per hour.
