The Dana Point Woman’s Club 4th annual chili cook off, held at Community House on Sunday November 14th , was enjoyed by about 60 members and guests. It served two important purposes –fostering fun and friendships among this group of philanthropic South Orange County women, and providing an opportunity to raise funds for charitable purposes.

DPWC hosted several philanthropic efforts this year, making donations to Family Assistance Ministries, Fisher House, Project Welcome, and United Way’s Financial Wellness Program among others. The Chili Cook-off was aimed at defraying most of the Club’s overhead costs in order to maximize amounts that can be funded directly to philanthropies. The evening was a resounding success, and early estimates put net proceeds at over $2,000.

The group’s Ways and Means Committee, headed by 3rd Vice President Marla Freeman, decorated the outdoor patio and lawn with party lights, red and white checked table cloths and cheerful sunflowers. Guests mingled and chatted while checking out beautiful theme baskets and silent auction items donated by members, their families and several local businesses. Tastings of 7 delicious chili’s generated a light-hearted competition, and the crowd enjoyed a wonderful dinner of the chili of their choice, cornbread, assorted salads and scrumptious homemade desserts.

Co - Presidents Betty Hill and Karin Marsh expressed gratitude for the great turnout and consistent generosity of Club members and guests. Event Chair, Marla Freeman, said she was “delighted to be part of a fun-loving club filled with such kind and generous members.” She was particularly thrilled that, as is typical, members not only helped with set up, decorating and food, but many also stayed to clean up afterwards!
