2 Sharp HealthCare Facilities Named Among the Best in U.S.

The San Diego-area facilities were recognized by a national watchdog group.

SAN DIEGO -- On Dec. 6, two San Diego-area hospitals, Sharp Memorial Hospital and Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, were recognized by a national non-profit hospital watchdog group as being among the top medical facilities in the United States.

The recognition came from the Leapfrog Group, a Washington, DC-based national nonprofit organization that pushes for leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care.

Leapfrog's "Top Hospital" designation is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive distinctions a U.S. hospital can receive, as it honors only elite performers dedicated to providing the highest level of patient care. Less than three percent of American hospitals earn the award.

The selection of Top Hospitals is based on the results of the 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care, and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital methodology.

Sharp Memorial and Sharp Mary Birch were two of 115 top hospitals recognized around the country overall, and among 56 top general hospitals. The Top Hospitals list includes nine children’s hospitals; 56 general hospitals; 21 rural hospitals; and 29 teaching hospitals.
