2 UC San Diego Students Selected for White House Internships

In addition to the UCSD students, four San Diego area residents who attend college out of state were chosen.

LA JOLLA, CA -- Two UC San Diego students are currently taking part in the White House's fall internship program, the Obama Administration announced today. Additionally, four San Diego area residents who attend college out of state were also named interns.

The area residents, who are interning from Sept. 6 to Dec. 16 are, according to the White House:

  • Marya Carter of Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, and;
  • Ivana Ro of Arcadia, near Los Angeles.

The area residents who attend college outside the state are Sophia Zaller, of Coronado, who goes to the University of Chicago; Gopika Mavalankar, of San Diego, who attends UC Davis; Monica Palid, of San Diego, who attends Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and; Mahmood Zomorrodian, of San Diego, a student at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

The internship program, according to the White House, provides an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills.

Interns work in one of several White House departments, including the Domestic Policy Council, the National Economic Council, the Office of Cabinet Affairs, the Office of Communications, the Office of Digital Strategy, the Office of the First Lady, the Office of Legislative Affairs and the Office of Management and Administration.

Other departments the interns could work in are the Office of Political Strategy and Outreach, the Office of Presidential Correspondence, the Presidential Personnel Office, the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, the Office of Scheduling and Advance, the Office of the Vice President, the Office of the White House Counsel and the President's Commission on White House Fellowships.
