7 New Landscape Design Ideas For Small Spaces

A guide to making small spaces into added home beauty and value

Are you suffering from the paralysis of analysis about a small space in your home? You know the space could be potentially converted into something special, but you just can’t figure it out.

Should you use it for well-designed outdoor living space for entertainment? Or is it a place that you want a new garden patch? When you don’t have much room for landscaping, you have to design the space to get the most of it. So where should you begin?

You should start with these seven space optimization tips:

  • Allow functionality to drive the space’s design. Brainstorm what you will use and delete any elements that are not priorities. Is the purpose for dining, relaxing, gardening, entertaining, all four, or more?
  • Don’t limit options for the space. Keep the layout open and multi-purpose. For instance, creating an L-shaped bar serves as a food prep station and bar area. The counter can be bar height (comfortable for food prep and bar stools) to allow for additional seats that can be tucked away when not in use.
  • Use contrasting plant material, such as a dark-colored background with a brightly colored foreground (e.g. a purple background with blue-green foreground; a dark green background with chartreuse foreground)
  • It’s a good idea to create layers in the landscape: tall, medium, accents and ground-covers.
  • For shaded areas, use variegated plant material to illuminate the space a bit more.
  • If you have a side yard, that could be a useful space for a vegetable garden patch, or for pets to frolick and play.
  • Minimize the small spaces, but maintain how dynamic they can be by using plants that will grow upward instead of outward. This will soften the edges of the property. Plants have the ability to add a healthy, green aesthetic to match the landscaping in San Diego. Choose plants that can also be easily sheered back without losing their shape, and not look to stiff and woody in its look.

Following these tips can turn your small space into the ultimate outdoor living area you could have never imagined.
