Beach Swimmers Beware, Weather Service Advises

SAN DIEGO, CA: Choppy waves and strong rip currents could cause problems for beachgoers Tuesday.

A National Weather Service beach hazards statement is set to remain in effect until 8 p.m. Surf of 3 to 5 feet and sets of up to 6 feet will be possible.

"A large northwest swell will continue to bring large surf and strong rip currents this morning," according to the weather service. "The swell and surf will gradually diminish during the day."

Forecasters warned that the surf and strong rip currents could result in dangerous swimming conditions.

"Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Sneaker waves can suddenly wash people off beaches and rock jetties," according to the weather service.

Swimmers can escape a rip current by swimming parallel to the coast before heading back to shore.
