The Athenaeum Art Center is excited to present the 21st Annual SDSU Art Council Scholarship Exhibition, featuring new work by five exceptional graduate and upper-division undergraduate students from the School of Art and Design at San Diego State University. Since 2002, the SDSU Art Council has recognized outstanding emerging artists with scholarships and the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Athenaeum, one of San Diego's most cherished cultural institutions.&nbsp;
This year's five recipients gather under a quietly urgent shared theme: the body as a site of history, resistance, and reinvention. Whether mapping chronic pain onto the indifferent American medical system, excavating the layered textures of immigrant memory, or refusing the limits imposed by colonial and binary thinking, these artists use their diverse practices to insist on visibility—for their communities, their experiences, and themselves.&nbsp;
Andrea Mendoza is a Mexican American painter and metalsmith whose oil paintings draw on the vibrant color traditions of Mexican art and her indigenous heritage. Working through a feminist lens, she reclaims narrative space for overlooked communities, presenting cultural identity with power and pride, and extending the canvas itself into wearable jewelry through metalsmithing. Tina Mardan, an Iranian American interdisciplinary artist, works across photography, painting, drawing, and installation to explore how memory, displacement, and the domestic environment shape a person's sense of belonging. Her layered compositions find the political embedded in the everyday. Todd Bradley is a San Diego–based mixed-media artist whose C7 Series confronts chronic pain, neurodivergence, and American cultural mythology head-on, using collaged medical imagery, book pages, X-rays, and embroidery thread to transform vulnerability into visual power. Ana Saad works in clay and fiber to investigate queerness, gender performance, and communal existence, distorting the natural world into something liminal and uncanny where trees and manufactured spikes carry the weight of growth, defense, and becoming. Isa Ybarra, a mixed-media painter and printmaker, channels Chicanx muralism, skate culture, and DIY activism into works that critique the racial, bodily, and gendered borders born of colonization, creating visibility for the queer Latinx community while challenging the systems that constrain it.&nbsp;
Together, these five artists make the case that art is not merely aesthetic; it is an act of presence and of claiming space.&nbsp;
The exhibition can be viewed in the Catherine and Robert Palmer Gallery at the Athenaeum Art Center (1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113) during open gallery hours, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and every second Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m., during the Barrio Art Crawl, and by appointment.

Shenel Johns is a dynamic jazz musician whose captivating stage presence and impressive vocal range are rooted in her early exposure to reggae and gospel. A graduate of the Hartt School, where she received mentorship from Jackie McLean’s esteemed alumni, Johns passionately shares her musical gifts globally, mentoring young artists and performing in residencies from Shanghai to Mexico. Winner of the Riga Jazz Stage Vocal Competition, she has collaborated with jazz luminaries like Wynton Marsalis and Damien Sneed, seamlessly blending traditional gospel, jazz, and diasporic influences in renowned venues and festivals worldwide, including recent performances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and in tribute to Max Roach.

We will likely meet 15 different plants on our Foraging Walks.&nbsp;There is a lot to cover, so many of the topics listed above will only be briefly discussed. We'll dive in as much as we can in the time we have. 
Accessibility for new foragers: I strive for my work to be accessible and open to all. Foraging School will be accommodating even for those who have never foraged a bite of food in their life. In fact, those are the people who stand to gain the most!
Suggested Donation: $75-$150 per adult. This is a fundraiser for the <a href="https://robingreenfield.org/communityfruittrees" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1 Million Community Fruit Trees Initiative</a>. Your support will help on this mission to plant 1 million fruit and nut trees over the next decade. We welcome all donations with joy and an open heart. As an act of deep reverence and gratitude, we are happy to provide Foraging School at no financial donation to Black and Indigenous folks. Of course, all are welcome to make a donation if desired, but we are truly happy to provide this opportunity for healing and connection.
What to Bring: Food. Water. We encourage reusable dishes, utensils, cups and water bottles. Cloth towels for napkins and tissues.&nbsp;A chair if you have one and would like one or blankets for sitting. If you have them you can bring: hand pruners or scissors, work gloves, small bags for harvesting food. Anything else you need to meet your needs for comfort. We will not provide garbage cans, so plan to pack any trash out with you.
Foraging School will be on rain or shine. 
Scholarship: We strive for Foraging School to be accessible to all, regardless of financial means. A little about Robin’s relationship to foraging: In 2019, Robin completed a year of growing and foraging 100% of his food and medicine. In 2022, he completed a month of foraging 100% of his food – with no gardens – down to the salt, oil and spices. He began passionately leading plant walks in 2022 and has a wealth of practical advice to share from experience of how you can truly break free from the global, industrial food system and live happily on the abundance of Earth. At the same time as being a highly experienced forager, he remembers what it was like to feel confused and overwhelmed and he is able to meet every new or advanced forager where they are at to be of best service. As of October 9th, 2025, he is immersed in <a href="https://www.robingreenfield.org/foragingyear" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">a year of foraging 100% of his food</a>, based in his homeland of Northern Wisconsin and is traveling the nation living by example and sharing his knowledge. He would absolutely LOVE to connect with you at Foraging School, sharing his deep experience and relationship with our plant relatives.

Levi Hammer’s solo piano album Gershwin in Vienna brings&nbsp;together his American roots and his current life in Europe, where he has lived for the last decade. The historical and musical connections between Gershwin, Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern are fascinating but rarely explored beyond a tantalizing footnote. At the Athenaeum,&nbsp;Hammer will play much of the album and speak about the musical parallels between Gershwin and the Viennese modernist masters. Paintings by Gershwin and Schoenberg—both accomplished painters!—will accompany Hammer’s performance of their music. In addition, the composers’ Californian connection will be highlighted in a short film shot&nbsp;on Gershwin’s own tennis court in Los Angeles in the 1930s—right where their legendary tennis matches took place. This program is also an artistic and personal self-portrait of Hammer himself&nbsp;as he describes growing&nbsp;from a child of the Great American Songbook to a conductor and pianist wrestling with the rigorous beauties of the Second Viennese School.

<h3>About Levi Hammer:</h3>
Known for his remarkable range and versatility, Levi Hammer performs regularly as both a conductor and pianist. He has conducted orchestras across the United States and Europe, and his repertoire encompasses more than 70 operas. Additionally, he has prepared acclaimed operatic productions for major conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, and Gustavo Dudamel. Besides the standard repertoire, Hammer is an accomplished performer of both Baroque and contemporary music. As a pianist, he appears as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, and art song collaborator, and he has frequently performed Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and Aaron Copland’s complete music for piano.

Young artists will dip their brushes into the exciting world of multimedia art!&nbsp;With acrylic paint, watercolors, oil pastels, and more, students will explore a variety of surfaces and materials to bring their imaginations to life.&nbsp;Inspired by popular artists and treasured storybooks, each day is a new adventure celebrating self-expression, encouraging confidence, and spreading the joy of making art.&nbsp;To the canvas and beyond!&nbsp;
Erica Hurley&nbsp;is a&nbsp;third grade&nbsp;teacher at Gillispie School. She recently returned to college and fulfilled her goal of earning a CA single-subject teaching credential in art. She is thrilled to begin a new chapter as an art teacher. She especially enjoys mixed media and three-dimensional art. When&nbsp;she’s&nbsp;not in the classroom, Ms. Hurley can be found spending time with her two children, gardening, baking, and of course, making art!&nbsp;

Jihye Lee, a highly regarded Korean-born jazz composer and bandleader based in Brooklyn, released her latest large ensemble album, Infinite Connections, in 2024. This album, which features traditional Korean rhythms as its foundation, has been praised as a powerful testament to her artistry. Lee has graced prestigious stages such as Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz. Her innovative approach to composition has garnered her numerous accolades, including the BMI Foundation’s Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize and the Korean Music Award.

We will work on a new project each day exploring oil&nbsp;pastels, watercolor, acrylics, collage,&nbsp;and mask-making. Learners will be directed based on technical&nbsp;and social-emotional&nbsp;skills—while&nbsp;also&nbsp;being&nbsp;given freedom to personalize each finished piece.&nbsp;
Sarah&nbsp;Ekedal,&nbsp;Art Coordinator&nbsp;at&nbsp;Grant UTK–8 Elementary in Mission Hills,&nbsp;specializes in creating art projects that connect young artists&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;broader&nbsp;community.&nbsp;While teaching art at Grant, Sarah coordinates&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;young art displays in the&nbsp;community,&nbsp;including the coordination of the production of 70 hand-painted banners for the&nbsp;annual&nbsp;Colors on Canvas Banners contest. She partnered with&nbsp;the New&nbsp;Children’s Museum to implement their Social Emotional Learning Through&nbsp;Art curriculum.&nbsp;Previously, Sarah was the&nbsp;art coordinator&nbsp;at Lindbergh-Schweitzer Elementary&nbsp;(now&nbsp;Clairemont Canyons Academy)&nbsp;and taught at Clay for Kids.&nbsp;
