Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) will host the “Igniting Hope, Building&nbsp;CommUNITY&nbsp;Family &amp; Friends Festival" on Saturday, May 2, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Liberty Station Central Promenade&nbsp;(2641 Truxtun Rd, San Diego, CA 92106). In recognition of Foster Care Awareness Month, the free, community-centered event will bring together nonprofit organizations, community leaders, volunteers, and young people looking for a path to success for an afternoon of connection, celebration, and collaboration.&nbsp;Moving beyond a traditional resource fair, the festival is designed as an immersive experience that strengthens connections across people and services. It focuses on building a more coordinated and accessible support system for transition-age foster youth and other underserved populations.&nbsp;The event will bring together hundreds of young people seeking pathways to stability, alongside community leaders, families, and friends working to build meaningful relationships and advance a more connected, solutions-based model of support. Attendees from the broader community will also&nbsp;have the opportunity to&nbsp;connect with organizations, explore volunteer opportunities, and learn how to get involved in supporting local youth.&nbsp;The event will feature approximately&nbsp;40 participating organizations&nbsp;offering resources across a wide range of services, including housing, education, job training, mental health support, financial literacy, and health services. Participating organizations will engage directly with attendees,&nbsp;showcase&nbsp;their impact, and connect with other peer organizations to&nbsp;identify&nbsp;gaps they can address together, helping to build stronger, more collaborative partnerships.&nbsp;Attendees can expect a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with live entertainment, interactive experiences, and local food. The event will feature a performance by San Diego-based artist Divina Jasso, along with entertainment from magician The Amazing Dana. Guests can also&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in yoga sessions, enjoy an open-air glam booth, and hear directly from two JIT youth speakers sharing their personal stories. A lineup of local food trucks, including Dirty Birds,&nbsp;Born&nbsp;in Brooklyn, Dilly’s Ice Cream, and Juicy Shawarma, will be on-site throughout the event. &nbsp;More than just a one-day event, “Igniting HOPE, Building&nbsp;CommUNITY”&nbsp;represents&nbsp;a broader shift toward collaboration in the nonprofit sector, bringing organizations together to better serve individuals who need a reliable, connected network of support.Participating organizations include:

Specializing in the rich and varied “sound-world” of the late 17th century, the Artifex Consort (Malachai Komanoff Bandy, Rebecca Landell, and Eva Lymenstull, bass viols; John Lenti, theorbo; Ian Pritchard, keyboards) closes our season with works showcasing the viola da gamba as an ensemble instrument outside of the English consort tradition, during the height of its later flourishing in parts of England and Germany. The program features virtuosic music for two bass viols by Christopher Simpson and Johannes Schenck, alongside lush and ingenious—though little-known—works for three bass viols by Benjamin Hely and Johann Michael Nicolai.

An ensemble dedicated to mediating theory and practice in spirited performance, Artifex Consort shares its name with the 17th century alchemical adept hard at work in both the library and the laboratory, the perennial student whose rigorous craft centers on cultivating and sharing knowledge through Nature’s artful imitation. This mission lends itself particularly well to reanimating lesser-known works of the 17th century Hamburg school of contrapuntists (Johann Theile, Johann Adam Reincken, Dieterich Buxtehude, and their circle), but the ensemble finds an equal home in the rich viol repertories of the French baroque and English consort traditions.

Artifex's base in Claremont, California invites blended inspiration from the cultural riches of metro Los Angeles and the rugged foothills of the San Gabriel mountains.
 
All concerts are preceded by a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. and are followed by a reception with the artists in the Sharon &amp; Joel Labovitz Entry Hall.

The Athenaeum Music &amp; Arts Library will host its annual benefit celebration, The Talk of the Town, on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in La Jolla. This year’s theme, Diamonds, Jazz and Dreams, promises a glamorous evening inspired by timeless elegance, live music, and community celebration.
Guests will enjoy an evening of live big band and jazz performances, dancing, signature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a buffet dinner while exploring the Athenaeum’s historic spaces and distinguished art collection. Cocktails will be provided by Endless Pour, and the evening’s culinary offerings by Pronto Catering by Giuseppe. The night will also feature a silent auction with a curated selection of unique experiences and items.
A VIP Hour will kick off the evening with red carpet arrivals, champagne and caviar, exclusive cocktails, live music by Ashley Anne and the Carnations, valet parking, and early access to the silent auction.
The Talk of the Town is the Athenaeum’s signature fundraising event, supporting its year-round programming, including concerts, art exhibitions, lectures, fine arts classes, and the continued growth of its renowned library collections. Now in its 127th year, the Athenaeum serves more than 100,000 visitors annually and remains one of only 17 membership libraries in the nation.
More than 200 of the Athenaeum’s most dedicated supporters are expected to attend this sparkling event which plays a vital role in sustaining accessible and inspiring arts programming for the San Diego community.

Climate change is fundamentally altering marine environments worldwide. But what does this mean for the creatures that call the ocean home? Join Professor Martin Tresguerres as he delves into the work of the Allen Discovery Center for Neurobiology in Changing Environments (ADC-NiCE), where researchers are working towards answering this question. Through a combination of neurobiology, physiology and environmental science, ADC-NiCE investigates how climate change affects the nervous systems and behavior of marine animals — ultimately guiding policy, conservation strategies and restoration efforts.

“Where the Heart Belongs” is a one-woman performance by Vietnamese artist Linh Tran, presented at the San Diego International Fringe Festival. Blending poetry, music, dance, and hand-painted visual art, the show transforms the stage into a living gallery--where every movement, costume, and object is an original artwork.
At its heart, the performance is a love letter to her first child, and a tribute to the child she lost--an emotional journey through motherhood, love, loss, and healing.
Some poems are sung live with melodies created on stage, while dance unfolds through improvisation--making each performance unique.
