Herringbone is Happening: Chef Malarkey's La Jolla Restaurant Opening

Celebrity chef Brian Malarkey's newest restaurant, Herringbone, will open for its first meal on Friday, May 25.

It's been eight months since we reported that celebrity chef . It's been eight months of salivating. Eight months of day dreaming what will be on the menu. And eight months of watching the old and abandoned brick building on Herschel Avenue transform into a modern restaurant destination.

And the wait is over. Malarkey's latest restaurant, Herringbone, will open Friday for dinner. While you had to be quick to snag a table for first meal at what will surely to be one of La Jolla's hottest restaurants, we hear there are still a few seats left for dinner on Saturday. Herringbone is Malarkey's fifth restaurant in San Diego County. Malarkey, a Top Chef alum, and Managing partner James Brennan run Searsucker (downtown), Burlap (Del Mar Heights), Gingham (La Mesa) and Gabardine (Point Loma).

Malarkey told Patch the menu will be an “Ocean Bazaar” and lead by Top Chef Season 7’s Amanda Baumgarten, a Los Angeles native.

“Amanda’s extensive background working with high-end seafood and big personalities in the kitchen will pair perfectly with our overall direction for Herringbone,” he said earlier this year.

While the menu has not been released, we were given a little taste of what is to come: clam and bone marrow pizza; whole fish ceviche; and Maryland soft shell blue crabs with creamed corn and tomato bacon vinaigrette.

Herringbone is slated to open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m.; and dinner Friday and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. But for now– it is just dinners through June 4.
