Immersive Technology Offers Seniors a World Without Limitations
White Sands La Jolla has embraced virtual reality to help deliver emotional, cognitive and social benefits to residents.

It’s been a busy few months for residents at White Sands La Jolla—visiting the Great Wall of China, touring childhood homes, even exploring ancient ruins in Italy. Thanks to eight new virtual reality (VR) headsets, outdoor adventures, sports and even excursions to the most remote places on Earth are literally within their reach.
“A few weeks ago, we introduced the technology to residents in skilled nursing,” said Pat Guerrero, the senior living community’s activity director. “We wanted to start off with a 15- or 20-minute session, but it turned into an hour. By the time I got there they had been whitewater rafting and skydiving. They’ve been having so much fun.”
The technology is by Rendever, a company that specializes in VR for older adults. White Sands currently offers the program twice a month to residents in skilled nursing, and most recently introduced it to assisted living and memory care residents.
Additionally, Guerrero says they’ve seen tremendous success using the headsets in one-on-one situations across all levels of living to help residents relax, refocus and reduce stress.
“I see VR being an integral part of our programming, not just as a one-off, but more as something we rely on,” said Guerrero, adding the shared virtual experiences have helped promote greater social engagement and cognitive stimulation. “We’re excited about the one-on-one use with residents who may have limited mobility. They can leave their apartments without leaving; it brings them joy and more interesting things to do.”
In addition to guided tours, adrenaline-filled activities and competitive games, the technology offers a resident portal where families can create and upload personalized 360-degree videos and content for their loved one to experience.
