Jewish Family Service Presents: "Substance Abuse Disorder in My Family - What Is Happening? What Can I Do?"

Expert Panel Discussion on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016 at Congregation Beth Israel

The Behavioral Health Committee of Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS) will host an educational event on substance abuse and addiction, in support of mental health awareness.

The event, “Substance Abuse Disorder in My Family – What Is Happening? What Can I Do?offers an enlightening and empowering panel discussion to separate myth from reality about substance abuse disorder. Speakers will show how science, family involvement, and compassionate support can combine for treatment strategies that work.

With substance abuse disorder still shrouded in mystery, the panel will address topics such as if an addict has to “hit bottom” to be ready for treatment and whether substance abuse is a sign of family dysfunction.

Moderated by Marti Emerald, San Diego city councilmember for District 9, the panel of experts will include:

  • Igor Koutsenok, MD, UC San Diego professor of psychiatry and former chief of Prevention and Treatment Branch of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in Vienna
  • Gretchen Burns Bergman, executive director and co-founder of A New PATH (Parents for Addiction Treatment and Healing).
