Prior to moving forward with the market, LJMVA surveyed its members to gauge interest and support. The response to the survey was overwhelmingly positive with over 90% of respondents saying that they were likely or extremely likely to support a weekly event such as the one being proposed. (Read more about the survey HERE.) After a formal RFP (Request for Proposal) process a volunteer group of community leaders interviewed candidates and selected Community Crops (Eat Food Less Traveled) to operate the market on behalf of the village. Community Crops also operates the Ocean Beach Farmer’s Market, the Gaslamp Artisan Market, and Otay Ranch Farmer’s Market. To create true collaboration, Community Crops will work with an advisory group comprised of representatives from La Jolla Town Council, La Jolla Village Merchants Association, LJ Community Planning Association and Enhance La Jolla.

For the past several years LJVMA has used surveys to make gather input from its members and the community at large. Moving forward with a public market was not without discussion and research. It was important to make sure this type of weekly event was something that made sense to our merchants and our neighbors.
La Jolla has a very successful Sunday Market. Overwhelmingly, however, village residents and businesses support the idea of a weekly street market with live music in the heart of the Business District within walking distance to hotels, shops, restaurants, and galleries. A mid-week market will serve the needs of the over 5000 employees who work, but don’t necessarily live in La Jolla.
The Cove with its marine life and natural beauty continues to be La Jolla’s number one attraction drawing tourists to La Jolla by the millions. The WOW! Market will bring more Cove visitors to La Jolla’s main streets for browsing, shopping and dining. See the Executive Summary HERE.
