Man Dies While Snorkeling at La Jolla Cove

The 49-year-old man was snorkeling with his family when he began to drown, authorities said.

La Jolla, CA — A 49-year-old man died Monday when suffered medical distress while snorkeling in La Jolla Cove.

Paul Rooney, a married New York resident, was in the water with his family at about 5:20 p.m. Monday when he suffered the medical emergency and began to drown, according to a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

He was taken to shore, where paramedics initiated advanced cardiac life support before transporting him by ambulance to nearby Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, were emergency department personnel continued ACLS, according to the report.

"Despite aggressive resuscitative efforts, he could not be revived and death was pronounced shortly after arrival," officials stated.

Rooney was pronounced dead at 6 p.m. of accidental drowning due to heart failure, according to the report.
