The beginning of the school year is a great time establish good math study habits. Here are some recommendations for creating a good math routine and daily practice that will lead to greater success in math.
- Take a mental break before starting math homework (at least 20 minutes).
- Hydrate and eat a small nutritious snack before doing math homework.
- Start homework early, just in case you have an exercise or math question that you need time to think about. Do not start math homework shortly before bedtime or the morning the assignment is due. It is okay to work on math before bed – your brain will process the material while you are sleeping.
- Math should be done in pencil, with an eraser handy for mistakes. It is okay to be slightly messy when you are figuring out a solution, if it helps you think better, but the completed work should show clear mathematical reasoning.
- Study math with a classmate whose math skill level is close to yours. It’s helpful to have a white board available to use as a shared workspace.
- Practice getting right answers and explaining reasoning (not just how you did it, but why).
- When you are stuck, persevere! But take a small break when your brain needs a rest.
- Get help when you need it.
