Permit Review Committee Approves Undergrounding of Overhead Utilities

According to the plan, approximately 13,300 feet of overhead utility lines and poles will be undergrounded in a section of La Jolla.

The La Jolla Shores Permit Review Committee met Tuesday at the . Here are some of the highlights from the meeting:

  • The committee approved a site development permit and coastal development permit for the undergrounding of overhead utility lines and poles for a section of La Jolla. According to the plan, approximately 13,300 feet of overhead utility lines and poles will be undergrounded in an area north of Avenida de la Playa and west of La Jolla Shores Drive. Through the Utilities Undergrounding Program, the city of San Diego is relocating approximately 30 to 35 miles of overhead utility lines underground throughout the city each year. After the La Jolla section of the project is approved by the city council, Mario Reyes, from San Diego’s Underground Utilities Program, said construction should begin in 2013 and be completed by 2015.
  • The committee granted a site development permit and a coastal development permit for a 4,463-square-foot addition to an existing single-family residence at 2480 Rue Denise. It was the fifth time the committee reviewed the plans, which have been changed three times. The latest plans included a split-level design of the house so much of the square footage of the home is not visible from street view.
  • The committee asked a permit applicant from 8289 La Jolla Scenic N. to continue planning and present updates at the next Permit Review Committee meeting. The owner wishes to demolish an existing 2,764-square-foot one-story house in order to build a new 4,655-square-foot two-story house with a basement. Committee members asked that the new plans consider changes to the design and materials of the entry tower, which they believed was too large and inconsistent with the rest of the design.

The next La Jolla Shores Permit Review Committee meeting will take place from 4-5:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the La Jolla Recreation Center, 615 Prospect St.
