The San Diego American Indian Pow Wow will take place on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 from 10 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in Balboa Park, on the southwest corner of Park Boulevard and Presidents Way. The Pow Wow is a cultural event that showcases the heritage and traditions of American Indians. As a demonstration of the cultural and spiritual traditions, participants of all ages will be drumming and performing bird songs, gourd dancing and fancy shawl dancing. Well known American Indian Drums Midnight Express and Sooner Nation will be performing at the event. In addition, vendors will be selling handmade jewelry, pottery, basketry, and a variety of other crafts and wares.
The Pow Wow will also feature a Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Zone that will include physical activities for youth, nutrition education games, and a variety of information booths with materials focused on promoting healthy lifestyles. Organizations from across the county will have information and recipes that incorporate traditional foods and plants.
The San Diego American Indian Pow Wow is much more than a social event. It serves as a time to celebrate the American Indian culture, remember times past for American Indian elders and provide a learning and spiritual experience for American Indian children, while promoting a healthier living environment and community.
