Schools across the nation are getting a math makeover this summer that is driven by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, generally referred to as Common Core math. The traditional way of teaching math, which is to teach arithmetic and symbol manipulation, is not adequate for building math understanding, and is no longer acceptable. Classroom instruction and tests will begin to reflect these changes noticeably this fall.
Don’t worry – these changes aren’t happening overnight. Teachers and administrators have been receiving professional development for the implementation of the new standards, and the transition is expected to take time. Your school leaders will tell you about it when the new school year starts, if they haven’t done so already.
Meanwhile, you can learn more about Common Core math at La Jolla Math Learning Center. We offer support for parents on our website and in monthly meetings. Our unique approach to teaching math is aligned with the Common Core math content and math practice standards. We have the expertise to help you and your child truly understand math.
