COVID-19 had a huge impact on our social lives & our connection to others. But for many of us, the pandemic taught us things we needed to learn about. One of the things we learned at the La Jolla Community Center is that our members and guests wanted to learn about technology—how to connect with their loved ones, store and send images, access their banking or vital health information using multiple devices. During the Pandemic we initiated iPhone/iPad classes with more than 20 classes offered since March of 2020. These classes are always well attended and seniors have told us that following class instruction, they had a higher level of confidence in using technology and reported a greater sense of independence in accessing online information and utilizing technology to enhance their lives.

A recent Pew Research Center analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data found that Americans ages 60 and older spend more than half of their daily leisure time (just over 4 hours) on their TVs, computers, tablets or other electronic devices and reported that about 53% of people aged 65 and older are smartphone users. However, they also noted that low technology literacy—including lack of familiarity with tech terminology—and physical challenges, which can make adoption difficult, were the biggest barriers to the seniors’ adoption of new technology. It was reported that just 18% of older adults would feel comfortable learning to use a new technology device such as a smartphone or tablet on their own, while 77% indicate they would need someone to walk them through the process.

The Next Step

We now want to go even further with assisting seniors with technology. We want to build a computer lab. We have done the research and costed out refurbished computers, furniture, an expanded transportation system and additional curriculum. For $1,000 we could obtain 10 refurbished computers, for $5,000 we could redesign a designated space in the Center with furniture and a screen. And for $50,000 we could do it all---build the lab, bring in computers and furniture, expand transportation, add in new levels of curriculum and implement marketing efforts to connect with seniors and more.

Help us make this dream come true. If you know anyone in the banking industry, or with a company or health care institution, please tell them about this opportunity. Help us get the word out and get this project finished. It takes a village—the dedication of many--to build this lab and help seniors become more proficient in technology to enhance their lives. And if you would like to donate as an individual, we’d love to receive your donation.
