Sports (and Some TV) Celebrities Tee Off at Morgan Run

More than 50 notables from the world of sports and entertainment will show just how good (or bad) their golf games are when they tee off this weekend in the Cox Celebrity Championship,  a 36-hole tournament at Morgan Run Resort featuring a  $100,000 purse and hosted by NFL quarterback Drew Brees.

Some of the well-known names scheduled to participate are sports hall-of-famers Jerry Rice, Marcus Allen, Jan Stenerud, Rollie Fingers, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Marcus Allen and Grant Fuhr, along with actor Jack Wagner--the event's defending champion.

Wagner will be joined by former MLB pitcher and four-time tournament champion Rick Rhoden, along with TV's Ray Romano and No Doubt drummer Adrian Young. Newcomers this year include the Chargers’ Vincent Jackson and NFL quarterback Carson Palmer. Former Padres scheduled to compete include Bret Boone, Kurt Bevacqua and Jesse Orosco. Other participants include Brees and the Cowboys’ Tony Romo.

A celebrity-amateur tournament runs Friday and Saturday, with the celebrities competing for the prize money and glory during their Saturday and Sunday rounds. Morgan Run Club and Resort is at 5690 Cancha de Golf, off Via de la Valle, in Rancho Santa Fe. Ex-Chargers quarterback Stan Humphries formerly hosted the event.

Tournament tickets good for the entire weekend are $10, with free admission for children 14 and under and military showing an I.D. Cox Cable customers can receive tournament tickets free by showing showing their Cox bill at the ticket gater show a Ralphs Rewards Card at the gate for free admission.
