Strong Winds To Hit San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA -- The National Weather Service Sunday placed parts of Southern California under a wind advisory, to go into effect at midnight tonight, potentially impacting travelers returning late from the 2018 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio.

Southwest to west winds of 35 to 45 mph, with gusts as high as 75 mph in some areas, were predicted for mountain and desert areas of San Diego and Riverside counties.

The weather could make driving difficult for anyone returning from the popular music festival late Sunday or early Monday, as Interstate 10 through the San Gorgonio Pass was predicted to be especially windy, according to the NWS. Interstate 8 through the East County mountains will also be impacted.

High-profile vehicles, like semi-trucks, RVs and campers, face the most difficulty operating in gusty weather.
Forecasters said the advisory will continue through 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Locally, about half of San Diego County, from the mountains east to the Imperial County line, was to be affected by the advisory.

Urban areas of San Diego, which are not included in the advisory's boundaries, were expected to see wind speeds no higher than about 25 mph, forecasters said.
