Swearing-in Ceremony for San Diego Mayor, Council Members Set for Today
The inauguration ceremony is taking place at the Balboa Theatre downtown.

SAN DIEGO, CA — The inauguration ceremony for San Diego mayor, city attorney and five members of the city council is scheduled this morning, followed by the selection of a new City Council president this afternoon.
The swearing-in ceremony at the Balboa Theatre downtown will include remarks by the elected officials, including second-term Mayor Kevin Faulconer, new City Attorney Mara Elliott and re-elected Councilmen Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman from Districts 5 and 7 respectively.
The three newly elected council members taking the oath of office include District 1 Councilwoman Barbara Bry, District 3 Councilman Chris Ward and District 9 Councilwoman Georgette Gomez.

The council will get right to work this afternoon when it convenes to elect a council president.
Councilman David Alvarez and Councilwoman Myrtle Cole have both expressed an interest in the position.

The council president will have considerable power. He or she will shape the debate over civic issues, set the panel's agenda, run the council meetings, determine committee assignments and appear often with the mayor in a ceremonial role.
