19 Citations Issued, Including 3 DUI Arrests, During Lake Elsinore Checkpoint

LAKE ELSINORE, CA — Three motorists were arrested for driving under the influence during an overnight law enforcement checkpoint in Lake Elsinore, authorities announced.

The Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station conducted the DUI and driver’s license operation from 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28, to 2 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Collier Avenue.

Deputies screened 471 vehicles during the six-hour operation, issuing 19 total citations. In addition to the three DUI arrests, among the citations were seven for unlicensed drivers and one for a driving with a suspended license. Five vehicles were towed during the operation.

Sheriff's officials select checkpoint locations based on historical data regarding alcohol- and drug-related collisions and arrests, emphasizing that the primary goal is public safety and deterrence.

Deputies reminded motorists that legal prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also cause impairment and lead to DUI charges.

First-time DUI offenses carry average penalties and fines of $13,500, along with a driver's license suspension.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
