Westbound 91 Freeway Closure Back On This Weekend In Corona

CORONA, CA — The full closure of westbound state Route 91 — canceled last weekend due to high winds — is back on the schedule, the Riverside County Transportation Commission announced Wednesday.

All lanes on westbound 91, between McKinley Street and Main Street in Corona, are closed from 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, through 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31.

The 91 Express Lanes in Riverside County will also be closed during the shutdown, as will the westbound 91 McKinley Street on-ramp.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area by using state Route 60 or other alternate routes and allow significant extra travel time.

Detour Route Options:

• Option 1: Head north on I-15, exit at Hidden Valley Parkway, enter southbound I-15, and head west on the 91.
• Option 2: Head south on I-15, exit at Magnolia Avenue, enter northbound I-15 and continue west on the 91.
• Option 3: Exit at McKinley Street, travel west to Magnolia Avenue, enter northbound I-15, and head west on the 91.

During the weekend closure, support structures will be set into place over the 91 freeway, a crucial part of the project. If work cannot be performed this weekend for weather or staffing reasons, it will be rescheduled again, according to RCTC.

The freeway construction is part of the $270 million 15/91 Express Lanes Connector project, designed to help reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety due to less weaving among lanes and improve travel time in toll lanes.

The connector is expected to open in 2023. Three additional weekend closures will be scheduled in 2022 and 2023 to place and remove additional support structures for the connector.
