LAKE ELSINORE, CA — A motorist killed after his vehicle rolled down a steep embankment on the Ortega Highway west of Lake Elsinore was identified over the weekend as a local man.

The crash occurred on the westbound side of the highway, near Main Divide Truck Trail, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency reported that the victim was at the wheel of a Honda Civic that apparently went out of control and veered off the highway, going down a steep hillside.

The car rolled an unknown number of times before coming to rest at the bottom of the embankment.

The coroner reported that the crash occurred sometime in April, without specifying an exact date, though the CHP reported it began receiving 911 calls about the incident the same day that the victim's body was recovered.

Following those calls, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location and firefighters hiked down to the crashed vehicle, pronouncing Barboza dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

Both sides of the 74 were shut down while crews worked to recover the victim.

The crash cause remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe page reportedly established for Barboza's family had raised $1,360 as of late Monday afternoon.
