MENIFEE, CA — A DUI checkpoint will be staged at an undisclosed location in Menifee on May 16, police announced on Wednesday.

Menifee police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on the history of DUI crashes and arrests in the city. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by deterring impaired driving.

"DUIs are extremely dangerous and can affect so many people with one bad decision made and that bad decision is driving impaired," said Sgt. Dan Beare.

"Driving while under the influence of alcohol, and/or drugs, is dangerous, potentially deadly and 100 percent preventable. Please arrange for a ride if you plan on drinking or designate a sober driver when going out, otherwise you may get arrested and face legal challenges."

Menifee police said impaired driving is not just from alcohol and can include some prescriptions, and over-the-counter drugs that may interfere with driving.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for the DUI checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
