LAKE ELSINORE, CA — The Inland Empire's NAACP chapter's Juneteenth celebration will return for its second year at Diamond Stadium in Lake Elsinore on June 19.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday, which has been celebrated in African-American communities since 1866, is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Black Independence Day.
