MENIFEE, CA — A DUI checkpoint will be staged at an undisclosed location in Menifee on June 13, police said.
Motorists will be screened for signs of impaired driving during a DUI checkpoint operation conducted from 7 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the Menifee Police Department.
Menifee police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on the history of DUI crashes and arrests in the city. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by deterring impaired driving.
"DUIs are 100 percent preventable and when somebody makes the bad decision to drive impaired; it can potentially have lifelong effects," said Sgt. Dan Beare of the Menifee Police Department.
"Driving while under the influence of alcohol, and/or drugs, is dangerous and potentially deadly. It not only affects the driver but so many families and friends too."
Menifee police said impaired driving is not just from alcohol and can include some prescriptions, and over-the-counter drugs that may interfere with driving.
Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
Funding for the DUI checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
