CORONA, CA — A woman was fatally struck by a train as she walked on the tracks underneath the 91 Freeway, Tuesday morning, in the city of Corona.
Shortly before 10:30 a.m., the unidentified woman was struck by a train on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line that passes underneath the 91 at the I-15 interchange, according to Lena Kent, spokesperson from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line.
The woman attempted to cross the tracks outside a "designated crossing" area, according to Kent.
The eastbound train immediately stopped, and all rail traffic was brought to a standstill as Corona Fire and Police Department personnel, along with Riverside County sheriff's deputies, reached the location.
Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
It was unclear why the victim stepped into the train's path.
Kent said the ensuing investigation, initially handled by the sheriff's department, was then turned over to BNSF Railway Police. The tracks were completely closed much of Tuesday, and have since reopened.
