MEAD VALLEY, CA — A 23-year-old motorist was fatally injured when his sports sedan was struck from behind by the driver of a pickup speeding on a Mead Valley street, authorities said Monday.

Christopher Osorio of Perris was killed shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Rider Street and Old Elsinore Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Javier Navarro said Osorio was in his Pontiac G6, going eastbound on Rider, when he came upon a red light at the intersection and stopped.

A motorist at the wheel of a Nissan Frontier pickup was going in the same direction "at a high rate of speed" when he reached the intersection and failed to slow down, plowing into the back of the Pontiac, Navarro alleged.

"The Nissan sustained moderate damage, while the Pontiac sustained major damage," he said. "(Osorio) was pronounced deceased at the scene by fire personnel."

The pickup driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment of moderate injuries and was in stable condition Monday.

The motorist was not arrested. However, the investigation is ongoing, according to Navarro.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Riverside CHP office at 951-324-7210.
