Kaiser Permanente Employee Struck, Killed On Sidewalk Outside His Riverside Workplace

RIVERSIDE, CA — A Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center employee was struck and killed Monday by a motorist who was reportedly being chased by police.

It started when officers with the Riverside Police Department approached a vehicle in a parking lot for a code violation and the driver abruptly took off, ABC7 reported.

"Police said that just seconds later, as officers were getting into their patrol vehicle to begin a chase, the suspect struck a pedestrian believed to have been on a sidewalk not far from the medical center," according to the news outlet.

According to the coroner's bureau, the incident occurred at 11:43 a.m. at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Park Sierra Drive, which is at the northwest corner of the Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center parking lot.

The victim was identified by the coroner's bureau as 42-year-old Peter Mullis of Riverside. He was pronounced deceased inside his place of work.

The driver remained at large Tuesday. No description of the suspect or the vehicle were immediately released.

Kaiser Permanent released the following statement Monday night:

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our employees in a traffic incident near Riverside Medical Center on July 27. Our heartfelt condolences are with the employee's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

"Questions regarding the accident should be directed to the Riverside Police Department. Our focus remains on supporting the employee's loved ones and others affected by this loss."

A GoFundMe page that is asking for donations to help support funeral costs for Mullis, states that he was married and the couple was "in the midst of their IVF journey."

"Peter and Layla shared a beautiful dream of growing their family together ...," according to the page.

As of Tuesday morning, the page had raised more than $2,700.

Eastbound Magnolia Avenue and all lanes at Park Sierra Drive near Magnolia were also closed to traffic for a few hours after the collision.
