FedEx Laying Off More Than 100 Workers In Inland Empire As Shipping Giant Closes Hubs

INLAND EMPIRE, CA — FedEx is closing two Inland Empire facilities, leaving more than 100 employees without jobs as the shipping giant undergoes a broader network overhaul.

Two separate California WARN notices filed late last month show 116 FedEx workers will be affected in the region.

According to state filings, the company is closing its facility at 111 Bird Center Dr. in Palm Springs and its hub at 12212 Industrial Blvd. in Victorville. Both closures are expected to take effect by the end of next month.

The Palm Springs facility closure will eliminate 62 jobs, while 54 workers will be laid off in Victorville, according to the notices.

FedEx released in emailed statement to Patch:

"As part of our previously announced network transformation strategy, the FedEx facilities on Bird Center Drive in Palm Springs and Industrial Boulevard in Victorville will close at the end of September. Team members at the facilities were notified several months in advance, and certain employees were offered other roles within the company. For customers who have historically used these locations for package drop off, other locations offering these services can be found at www.fedex.com.

"These decisions are never taken lightly and reflect our commitment to supporting affected employees – through job placement assistance, relocation aid, or severance, as applicable – while transforming our network and continuing to provide an outstanding experience for our customers."

The local job cuts reflect broader changes across the company. FedEx has been executing what it calls a "network transformation" over the past several years, with the goal of consolidating its air and ground operations into a single integrated logistics network.

As a result of the overhaul, the company projects nearly $2 billion in annual savings by the end of 2027.

The consolidation has prompted additional layoffs across the state, including 57 workers in San Diego effective Aug. 31. Last year, the company cut 95 jobs in Oakland and another 79 in Emeryville.
