March Field Air Museum, Local Airports, Celebrating National Aviation Day

Congress established Aug. 19 as National Aviation Day in 1939 to honor aeronautics pioneer Orville Wright.

RIVERSIDE, CA — Open houses, children's activities and aeronautical displays are planned for Wednesday at two Riverside County airports and a museum in recognition of National Aviation Day.

At the March Field Air Museum, a scavenger hunt for visitors is planned around the dozens of aircraft on display at the location. There will additionally be an "airplane-making station" and temporary displays adjacent to the museum's replica Wright Flyer, according to museum spokesman Michael Ellzey.

At Perris Valley Airport, Skydive Perris will host individual and group jumps.

The Palm Springs Air Museum did not list any special events planned Wednesday. However, its "Warbird Rides" portal showed reservations were available for short trips aboard multiple museum aircraft.

NASA has a webpage dedicated to National Aviation Day at nasa.gov/aeronautics/orville-wright-and-national-aviation-day/.

Congress established Aug. 19 as National Aviation Day in 1939 to honor aeronautics pioneer Orville Wright, whose birthday falls on the date. Orville and Wilbur Wright are the recognized pioneers of heavier-than-air powered flight, thanks to Orville's feat at the controls of the brothers' Wright Flyer on Dec. 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
