"The safety of our community is and always will be our mission. Driving under the influence is dangerous and puts further strain on critical resources," the department said.

Authorities said checkpoint locations are chosen based on the history of DUI crashes and arrests in the city. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by deterring impaired driving.

Impaired driving is not just from alcohol and can include some prescriptions, and over-the-counter drugs that may interfere with driving, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for the DUI checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
