LAKE ELSINORE, CA — As a storm system makes its way to Southern California, Lake Elsinore officials are encouraging residents to be prepared for rainfall this weekend.
"Forecasters are expecting the potential for an above-normal rainy season across Southern California this fall and winter. That means now is the time to make sure your household is ready—not when the rain is already coming down," the city said.
The city advised residents to take several steps to protect themselves, their homes, and pets, and be safe on the road.
At home, residents were encouraged to:
• Clean leaves and debris from gutters and storm drains
• Check the roof, gutters and downspouts for problems
• Clear debris away from drainage areas
• Secure patio furniture, umbrellas and outdoor items
• Check flashlights and batteries are working
• Have emergency supplies and medications ready
• Know where your main water, gas and electrical shutoffs are located
Pet owners were also advised to keep their animals safe:
• Keep pets indoors during severe weather
• Make sure collars and identification information are current
• Have pet food and water available
• Include medications, leashes, bowls, and comfort items in emergency kits
• Never leave pets outside during severe weather
Before hitting the road, the city said motorists should take the following measures to be prepared for rainy roads and highways:
• Check windshield wipers and tires
• Allow extra stopping distance on wet roads
• Never drive through a flooded roadway
• Watch for standing water, debris and reduced visibility
"While this storm is not expected to be a major event, now is the perfect time to protect your home, family, and pets," the city said.
