RIVERSIDE, CA — A $1 billion project to construct a 12-mile expressway between San Jacinto and Winchester to expedite traffic flows has an official name now.
The "San Jacinto Valley Expressway Project" was the title selected after public input was sought via surveys over the summer to finally affix a designation, according to the Riverside County Transportation Commission.
The proposed four-lane north-south expressway is in the final planning stages after more than 20 years of environmental studies, surveys, engineering and design drafts, RCTC said.
Other name options county residents were invited to vote on included "Hemecinto Expressway," "Heritage Expressway" and "Pleasant Valley Expressway."
The proposed corridor, until recently informally dubbed the "Highway 79 Realignment Project," will require multiple phases of construction, ultimately connecting Domenigoni Parkway in San Jacinto to Gilman Springs Road in Winchester, west of Diamond Valley Lake, officials said.
The four-lane expressway will be part of the state highway system, intersecting Highway 74 near Homeland.
A potential groundbreaking date has not been announced, though it will likely be more than a year down the road.
