LAKE ELSINORE, CA — With mosquito season in full swing, Lake Elsinore officials encouraged residents on Tuesday to report mosquito problems for free vector control services.
City officials said the Northwest Mosquito Vector Control District is frequently around the city answering service calls and tracking mosquito activity.
Local and state officials target high populations of mosquitoes because they can carry illnesses such as the West Nile Virus.
The advisory comes after Riverside County recorded its first two detections of West Nile Virus during this year's mosquito season, prompting officials to authorize anti-mosquito spraying operations.
In August, the Riverside County Vector Control Program confirmed two positive detections of West Nile Virus. The first positive mosquito pool was identified during routine surveillance in Nuevo. The second detection was confirmed through laboratory testing of a dead bird found near Spencer's Park in the unincorporated area of Murrieta.
Three cases of human West Nile Virus infection have been documented in Riverside County so far this year.
