ONTARIO, CA — Iconic Southern California favorite Porto's Bakery & Cafe officially confirmed Tuesday that it is opening its first Inland Empire location.
The announcement, delivered via a video on the company's Instagram account, puts an end to speculation sparked after municipal documents revealed the city's Development Advisory Board reviewed plans for a site near Ontario International Airport. The proposed 8.6-acre property sits at the southwest corner of Archibald Avenue and Inland Empire Boulevard, near Interstate 10.
Applications filed with the city of Ontario list Chief Executive Officer Raul Porto — son of the late founders — alongside Leo Prats of Prats Inc. Architecture & Construction, the firm behind several existing Porto's storefronts.
The expansion into Ontario marks a major milestone for the family-owned business, which traces its roots to Cuba. According to the company's history, founders Rosa and Raul Porto Sr. began baking out of their home after losing their jobs following the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s. After emigrating to California, the couple opened their first official storefront in Los Angeles' Echo Park neighborhood in 1976, quickly gaining a passionate following for their signature cheese rolls, potato balls, and Cuban pastries.
The Ontario restaurant will mark the brand's eighth physical location. Porto's currently operates six bakeries across Los Angeles and Orange counties, with a seventh under construction near Downtown Disney in Anaheim.
While a timeline for the Ontario opening has not yet been announced, development projects for the high-volume chain typically span several years. Porto's locations are known for drawing massive crowds, featuring a multi-counter setup for hot meals, drinks, and packaged baked goods.
Menu favorites include Cuban cuisine such cheese rolls, empanadas, tamales, meat pies, sweets, and many other dishes.
