Burglary Suspect Shot By Sheriff's Deputy In Palm Desert

The deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy.

PALM DESERT, CA — A burglary suspect was shot by a Riverside County sheriff's deputy Sunday inside a home in the Palm Desert area, authorities said.

Deputies were dispatched to the 49000 block of state Highway 74 at about 2:45 a.m. on a report of a burglary in progress, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. The caller was hiding in a bedroom but could hear someone inside the residence.

Upon arrival, deputies entered the residence through an unlocked door and detained one subject, when a second subject appeared from a back room allegedly armed with a knife. Deputies gave commands to drop the knife, but the suspect refused, and a shooting occurred, according to the department.

"Deputies provided medical aid, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other detained subject was transported to the station, interviewed, and later released," sheriff's officials said.

No additional injuries were reported. The suspect's identity was not released.
