Elsinore High School Takes Home Honors at County's Academic Decathlon

A team from Hemet’s West Valley High School won top honors in this weekend’s 2015 Riverside County Academic Decathlon, beating out teams from 18 other county schools.

The 32nd annual competition was held Saturday at Heritage High School in Romoland. West Valley High emerged victorious, winning the Super Quiz—where spectators watched teams answer questions and immediately view their scores— and a number of other events. The team will advance to the California Academic Decathlon, held next month in Sacramento.

Second place overall honors went to Elsinore High School and third place went to Hemet High School.

About 200 Riverside County high school students grades 9 through 12 competed in the decathlon. Each team consisted of nine students, three from each grade point category of Honor (GPA 3.75-4.00), Scholastic (GPA 3.00-3.74) and Varsity (GPA 0.00-2.99).

The annual event is sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education and involves writing essays, delivering prepared and impromptu speeches and interviewing with judges.

This year’s theme was “New Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation.”
