Explosions, Live Rounds Expected To Be Heard Across Elsinore, Wildomar

Camp Pendleton issued a noise advisory alerting residents that troop training will get loud Aug. 14-19.

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — Troops at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton will continue conducting live fire exercises starting Sunday, and the noise could extend to Lake Elsinore and Wildomar.

Base officials announced Friday that a noise advisory was in effect Aug. 14-19. Troops will be firing high explosive munitions in the base's Whiskey/Zulu Impact Area each day from 6 a.m. to midnight. The area is west of Murrieta and Temecula, and as the crow flies is less than 20 air miles from the cities.

Depending on atmospheric conditions, communities as far as 50 miles away from the impact areas may be able able to hear the explosions, according to base officials.

The base regularly conducts live munitions training that can be heard across Southwest Riverside County. Residents unfamiliar with the noise sometimes mistake it for thunder or sonic booms.
