UPDATED: Fire Destroys Wildomar Home, Workshops, 14 Vehicles
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
UPDATED: A home and other property were destroyed by a blaze that broke out Tuesday afternoon in Wildomar, a fire official is reporting. The brush fire was reported at 2:14 p.m. in the 21900 block of Walnut Street, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann. Forty-two firefighters, 12 engine companies and four overhead personnel tackled the two-acre blaze that has been contained, she reported. A family safely escaped the flames, but one firefighter sustained minor injuries, Hagemann continued. Two dogs also perished, but there are no reports of other injuries. Officials from Animal Friends of the Valleys were on scene.
One house under remodel construction was destroyed. Additionally, two workshop out buildings, 14 vehicles, one 20-foot travel trailer, seven miscellaneous utility trailers, two boats and their trailers, and four utility sheds were destroyed.
According to Wildomar resident Gary Andre, the yard at the residence contained "piles of junk" everywhere. Andre, a former planning commissioner for the City of Wildomar, said today's fire could have been avoided if officials and residents followed the home occupation law enacted by the county and adopted by the city. "This is why the city needs to crack down on this kind of thing," he said. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. In addition to Cal Fire, firefighters from Murrieta were called to the scene, along with Riverside County Sheriff's Department deputies. Hagemann confirmed more than one fire did spark in the Wildomar neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, however she said the blazes were all related to the Walnut fire.
