INLAND EMPIRE, CA — An early morning road rage shooting on the I-15 Freeway near the Cajon Pass injured at least two people and caused a multi-vehicle collision Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The southbound I-15 was closed for about five hours during the investigation, according to CHP.

Just after 9:30 a.m., a shooting occurred in Hesperia, near the Oak Hill Road ramp on the southbound I-15 Freeway, when one driver opened fire at another, according to multiple news agencies. According to the CHP, traffic was diverted until around 2 p.m. when the roadway reopened.

According to CHP investigators, there was “an incident involving a white Ford F-350 pickup truck and a black Volvo XC70.”

The drivers exchanged words and honked as they maneuvered the I-15 through the Cajon Pass when the Volvo driver allegedly aimed a gun and fired at the truck, according to the CHP. The truck and the Volvo collided, and the Volvo struck a white Toyota Tundra that was not involved in the road rage exchange, according to CHP Capt. Lance Berns.

The driver of the truck was shot in the leg, and according to officials, bullet holes were evident in the side of that vehicle. The Tundra driver was also injured. Both were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

CHP is searching for the black Volvo that fled the scene. It is thought to have damage on its front and rear bumpers.

Berns offered advice to drivers frustrated while navigating southern California roadways in a statement obtained by ABC7:

"Drive to your destination, follow the speed laws and don't engage with other vehicles," Berns said. "If an incident occurs where there is an unsafe lane change, do not escalate it into something that is more serious."
