Lake Elsinore Lawmaker Asks Local Youth To Propose New Laws

TEMECULA, CA — Sen. Jeff Stone, R-Temecula, Wednesday announced the start of his annual "There Ought to be a Law" contest, seeking proposals for legislation from high school students throughout the 28th Senate District.

"By asking our high school students to propose new laws, I am hoping to tap into their bright, inquisitive minds and also to inspire them to get involved in politics and public service," Stone said. "I am looking for proposed legislation that addresses issues on both the local and statewide level."

The senator's office will accept proposals until Dec. 7, when staff will begin scrutinizing entries, with a winner expected to be selected before year's end.

"I will choose at least one of the entries and begin the process of creating legislation to be considered by the California Senate and Assembly and, hopefully, signed by the governor," Stone said.

Previous winners hailed from Shadow Hills High School in Indio and Rancho Mirage High School.

The 28th Senate District encompasses all of the Coachella Valley, as well as Canyon Lake, Idyllwild, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta and Temecula.

Stone said that he will meet with the author of the winning entry in January or February and invite him or her, along with a parent or guardian, to Sacramento to testify about their proposal.
