Lake Elsinore Man Shoots Home Intruder Dead

Sheriff's officials say that the homeowner warned the would-be burglar not to enter.

Sheriff’s officials out of the Lake Elsinore station are investigating the death of a man who was trying to break into someone’s home when he was shot.

The incident happened Sunday, at around 10:45 p.m., in the 100 block of South Torn Ranch Road, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Manning.

“As officers responded, the female 911 caller reported that an unknown male subject was attempting to force entry into her family home and said her husband had armed himself with a handgun,” Manning said.

The husband apparently warned the man trying to break into the house to stay away.

“As the intruder was breaking into their home, her husband warned the suspect that he was armed and would shoot him if he continued to force his way into their residence,” Manning said. “The suspect ignored the warning, broke a window and continued to force his way into their residence and was shot by the homeowner.”

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries, Manning said.

Police don’t believe the man knew the couple, and at this time, charges aren’t being filed against them.

“The investigation is continuing and once completed, will be submitted to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for review,” according to Manning.

The identity of the suspected burglar is being withheld pending family notification.
